The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has awarded a five-year R25 research education grant (R25NS149357) to continue and expand NeuroDataReHack as the NeuroData AI Summer School. The program has run every year since 2022, first at the Allen Institute, then as a satellite of the IBRO World Congress in Granada, and since 2024 at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus, which continues to host and sponsor it. Participants arrive with a question they want to answer from existing data, form teams around shared datasets on the DANDI Archive, take instruction in the mornings from the developers of NWB, DANDI, SpikeInterface, Pynapple, and other community tools, and spend most of the week on project work.

The award funds a longer week with a substantially larger share of the curriculum devoted to AI methods for neural data, and it gives the program stable funding for the first time, so teaching materials can accumulate from year to year and faculty can be invited well in advance.

The first school under the new name runs July 19 to 24, 2027 at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia. It is free to attend, with lodging and meals provided. Applications are open until Friday, January 29, 2027 and are reviewed on a rolling basis. The program website also holds the schedules, recordings, project write-ups, and reports from every past installment; the NWB site’s event pages for 2022 to 2026 remain in place.
